*Robert Cywes,* dual board certified in Adult General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery, talks about the effectiveness of diets, Ozempic and bariatric surgery for weight loss. While all results in weight loss, with bariatric surgery overwhelmingly being the most effective intervention, they don't treat the cause of obesity. According to traditional epidemiological thinking, caloric excess causes weight gain and obesity causes type 2 diabetes; therefore weight loss resolves type 2 diabetes. But the problem of weight gain is *chronic excessive carbohydrate consumption* – our relationship with sugar and starch as a drug for emotional management rather than for nutrition, Dr. Cywes says. "A snack is always an emotional event, it is never a nutritional event." Watch the video to learn more about weight loss vs. obesity management.
Dr. Cywes specializes in metabolic healthcare, including pediatric and adult obesity, diabetes, insulin resistance, lipidology, metabolic brain development such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, PCOS, Lipedema and other endocrine disorders. He is a strong proponent of Therapeutic Carbohydrate Restriction and works in a private practice alongside low-carb specialist RD Dieticians, Certified Diabetic Educators and psychologists and psych Nurse Practitioners focused on behavioral health transformation.
